What would be a good fishing trip in the northern Californian area for my almost 10 year old son?

I had kind of envisioned taking him to Lake Tahoe for one of the half day trips. I like the idea of one of these trips where they provide the tackle, and take you out. He’s had almost no experience fishing. I don’t mind spending some money, but I would like to get good value for it. Maybe someone knows an area a little less traveled than Lake Tahoe. Go to Packer Lake in the Tahoe National Forest. It is about 30 miles from Tahoe and offers great fishing. There are no speed boats or anything similar allowed on this lake as it is somewhat small. You can rent a canoe or an aluminum row boat for 8 hours at 30 bucks or so. About 3 weeks ago, the DFG planted this lake once with 1000 pounds of brook trout, two days later with 1000 pounds of rainbows, then a week or so later with 2000 pounds of a mixture of both. This was all for a kids fishing tourney, but there wasn’t a very high turn out for the event so there are still A LOT of fish in there. I just went last weekend and within 2 - 8 hour days, my gf and I caught around 40 trout, released some, but kept our limits both days. Power bait and inflated night crawlers are the hot ticket.

Those planters are small, 8-12″ inch fish. They’re fun for a bit but not the same as a charter on Lake Tahoe.
Most of the charters are hitting the north shore as of this week since the bite for mackinaw has moved up there. They provide the tackle and the knowledge, and trust me, the fish are a lot more fun up there. I would check with the local big charters. The scenery is always amazing, and the charters will do everything they can to get you on fish.
I prefer not fishing with wire line, it takes some of the fun out of fishing. I don’t remember which charters up there fish with wire line and which just use downriggers, so you’d have to ask.
If you want to awe your son, and give him more of a fishing trip, then I would go to tahoe. If you just want to have a quiet, more secluded time together, then I would lean toward Devyn’s answer….
