just get yourself a 7ft rod,(i like cherrywoods, there cheap) with like a $30 reel. 12lb test ex tough trilene fishing line.for lures, storm thundersticks,jr thundersticks, doctor spoons, cast master spoons, and rattle traps.

the best way to pick a lure (because its different where ever you go) go there with a lure or 2 and see what the local's are catching on. the storm thunderstick is a good starter, i've snagged so many salmon on these lures. if there thick in there you'll have fun. thundersticks dive about 9ft, so if the snake river is less than that use jr thundersticks they dive about 5ft (cabelas and fleetfarm have all the lure above)

i bank fish every year during the salmon run, i wouldn't spend $150 on a salmon rod, for a fish that comes up the river once a year. artie's a troller and he catches fish all year round(judging from his pic). if you plan on doing any other type of fishing like, bass, panfish, and walleye, a 9ft rod ain't what you want. plus will a 9ft rod fit in your ride (you might want a 2 piece rod). salmon are one of the hardest fighting fish, its all about using your drag. trolling takes the fishing out of fishing, its driving a boat,no finesse involved
you can buy 2 good fishing poles for $150. talk to the locals for lures they'll know best, most fisherman are glad to help out others go muskie or go home!

Here is the kind of information you need to learn and since you are a student this won't be too difficult. below is the link of answers to all the questions here asking about best rod and reel for salmon. Remember these are opinions and what would be best for you is what will fit best into your hands perform perfectly when used, hold up to certain abuse and worth every penny you are short of. After you read all the suggestions you need to take a narrowed list to a tackle shop and tell them what you want to do what you have to spend and ask them to let you hold the set-up that will best work for your needs. Once you get the right feel and are comfortable with an evenly weighted and matched rod and reel write down the model numbers of both and look for them on line adding closeout after each make and model number. the line, lures, terminal tackle, box, and all the other things you will need will follow in short time. But don't skimp on the rod and reel, an angler is only as good as his equipment (and knots). Artie
