and they aren't thrown as easily.
you should hear some of the deck hands on some of the party boats bitching about circle hooks when trying to remove them...
"GAW DAMM CIRCLE HOOKS !!"

they just don't like to have to take the time.

To answer your question, a circle hook can be used for trolling with bait, bottomfishing, and almost any other kind of fishing that would use a regular hook. They are not made to be used for any specific type of fishing. I have had the most luck with using them for bottomfishing in saltwater, but I'm sure if it's the right size, then they will do just fine in freshwater.
A circle hook is different from a regular hook because the shank (the long part), is shorter, and the gap (the part that bends), is wider than that of a regular "J" hook, making the hook look like a circle. They are made to prevent "gut hooking" the fish (having a fish swallow the hook). These have never failed me even once.
The way that these work is when a fish swallows it, then the hook rotates inside the mouth quickly due to the circular shape. This hooks it in the mouth. These are great for striped bass, rock bass, and other large-mouthed fish.

Charlie got it, the hook will generally set in the jaw and not gut hook a fish. So when you're fishing for bill fish or others that you'll release anyway, use circles. Fishing in the Gulf on the W coast of FLA, we have to by law. But they DO NOT make it easier to catch fish. Most people want to pull back and set the hook, WRONG. With a circle, just reel in slack line, the hook will turn and do it's job. If you try to set it, you'll pull it out. When you get used to them, they do the job, especially when flat lining for yellow-tail.

mmsvt66,

The purpose of the circle hook for any fishing situation is to avoid hurting and/or killing a fish. The circle hook hooks the fish in the jaw around 90% of the time. That's a lot better than a standard J hook. The circle hook is mostly widely famed for saltwater fishing and freshwater cat fishing. But you can use a circle hook for any type of fishing as long as you use a sized that fits the fish you are catching.
