  1. Backwater Charlie Says:

A 9′ or 10′ MH Spinning rod with a big Spinning reel in your price range. Backwater Charlie

Because surf fishing is a very specialized type of fishing it requires some very specialized tackle. Surf rods from 10 to 12 feet long like the St Croix Premier model, capable of slinging 6 ounces of lead weight plus a bait up to 100 yards beyond the breaking surf are seen up and down the beach. A heavy duty spinning reel like the Quantum Boca PT Saltwater model is the usual reel found on these rods. Surf anglers argue regularly as to whether the length of the rod, or the design of the reel, or the size of the rod guides plays the biggest part in achieving long casts.

    Reels??

    1. Penn, 650 SSm-

    2. Daiwa, Black Gold BG20-

    3. Daiwa, Emcast Sport 5000-

    4. Fin Nor, Sportfisher FS60-

    5. Shimano, Spheros 5000-

    Rod???

    1. Ugly Stik, Big Water 10′ MH-

    2. Daiwa, Emblem 10′ MH-

I don’t know your budget so I’ve listed a variety of excellent reels and rods in various price points.

One tip- If your on a limited budget, spend more on your reel than your rod. A 10′ Ugly Stik is fine for most Surf Applications.

Not to be rude, but the Quantum Boca has a mediocre reputation. Please read reviews here-

Hope this helps ya? Good luck fishing! Fisher_King
