What is a good fishing weight replacement? “Since lead is harmful and expensive”?

Marijuana Is Spiritual Evolution asked:

I fish a lot and can’t really see the point in wasting money on something that I will probably lose on a rock or tree within a week and even poison a fish or eagle. Does anyone have any good ideas on replacement sinkers?
Mainly bait fishing.
I like to use the gold mustad hooks mostly, theyr’e great for minnows and bend when you snag a tree or whatever and you wont break your line.

a steel nut maybe use your scale and measure for the right weight. yes it will rust so you have to change them every couple of weeks. and remember to always use steel hooks not stainless that way if a fish swallows the hook you can cut the line and tie on a new one. a fishes stomach runs from its lips to its A$$hole and a steel hook will disolve in a week

In Australia, we use natural resources.

Like a broom stick, some cork, and a bunch of spark plugs.
even old tin juice cans for reels.

You might have noticed that the fish only bite on the last bit of the line.
So the first bit of the line can be “ski rope”.

When you go low tech you find all sorts of stuff that works with out the branding and advertising.
