Emi C asked:

Me and my dad are going trout fishing soon and we want to know what we should keep our trout in that will be versatile, so that we can keep walking through the river.

We used to use real cool woven baskets, but I haven’t seen them for awhile. Get a creel, a canvas bag on a shoulder strap. There are plenty of them on the market. Goggle Cabala’s. Here is a tip to keep your fish fresh while in your creel. Keep a bag of ice in it or fill it with water soaked grass while you fish. I remember when I was a kid and would hike into the back hills there would be snow left in some heavily wooded areas and provided a convenient way to keep our fish fresh.

There are commercial creels designed to hold fish but any cloth or canvass bag that can be closed securely yet still breath will work. I put some grass, ferns or other greenery in the bottom and wet it down to keep the fish as fresh as possible. I also do a quick job of cleaning the fish I want to keep as I catch them. It only takes a minuet or two and it dose two things. It vastly improves the quality of the fish over waiting till the end of the day to clean them and it shows me what they are feeding on. I found out the cleaning trick one day when I was very low on hooks. A trout had swallowed my hook and I cleaned it to get the hook back. The rest of the fish I caught I just stuffed in the creel as usual. At the end of the day the fish I cleaned just after I caught it was way fresher looking and much firmer than the ones I cleaned at the end of the day. Also if you clean as you go the job is already done at the end of the day.
Good luck and have fun! steven a

Added: Before I educated/graduated to Catch n' Release, I'd put trout in an old, OLD bamboo creel, cover them with wet/damp leaves, occasionally dumpin' a' couple of handscoopes of river/creek water over them.
    Just food for thought... FishSteelhead

The river. Given the rampant pollution of our waters and the constant encroachment of man on all things natural, I firmly believe the future of trout in our country depends on the practice of catch and release. If you insist on keeping fish, keep only what you will eat. All too often, trout frozen for later become forgotten, freezer burnt waste for next year. I love trout fishing, and now fish for them exclusively with flies, because one never has the problem of swallowed hooks, and the mortality rate of released fish is much lower. If you keep fish, you must keep them cool while fishing and I recommend dressing them as soon as possible after the catch. This slows the spoiling process by removing fragile entrails, and keeps the fish tasting fresher.

Just a plain ol’ nylon stringer. One with clips on it would help keep the trout organized. Grand Master BasserĀ®
