What are you doing to promote fishing?
freesince1776 asked:
It’s easy for us anglers to want to keep our favorite fishing holes all to ourselves. But with fewer and fewer young people being introduced to, and picking up, fishing there might one day not be anyone to fish those holes. So I want to know what are you doing in your community to get kids hooked on fishing?

i have a large pond behind my home & usually, once a month, will have the neighborhood kids over for a day of fishing, at the end of which, we have a fish fry.
also, about every other weekend, will take 1 or 2 of the kids & a parent out fishing ( i live on Lake Okeechobee ) .
my method, seems to be working

I do as much as I can without giving all the information away to adults but for the kids I set them up right on top of fish but never stay to long at one good spot.
This does a couple things allows them to catch fish and not over pressure one spot. And lets them pick spots with “”a little guidance”" to find a hole for themselves. Now talk about kids being involved in fishing and hearing them tell their parent or parents that “they”found this super spot to catch fish.
You dont want them to be on fish all the time because in time of low bites they can become very bored so I make it fishing not just all catching. If all else fails I take kids to a small gill “honey hole” to just catch a bunch of 3″ to 6″ to make it an all rounded good time.

Unplug the computer, turn off the TV take the mouse out of their hand and put a rod and reel its place and take the kids carp fishing. One big fish and they will be hooked.

My self I have no kids at home, but do contribute gear to a local “Take a kid fishing”.
My bass club also supports Trooper Island, on Dale Hollow Lake which is run by the Ky State Police. They take kids there for all shorts of outdoor activities. We have even run some club Tournaments and no one wins anything but a plaque 1-3, all the money goes to the island. We have also done some raffles with all the money going to the island.
Plus while I am fishing I make sure not to leave any trash, make sure I am courteous to any other boaters/fisherman and help if I can when someone breaks down.

I dont know were you are from but here in Arkansas 28% of the population are licenced to fish. This figure doesnt even include youngsters.
The amount of fishermen out on the lakes has at least quadrupled in the last 10 years here. No way am I trying to talk more into coming out lol
My son could catch and clean his own bluegill at age 5, he is 7 now and becoming quite the fisherman. The Shuffields (Ron and Spencer) that fish the bassmaster and FLW tournaments are from here in the same small town. I always saw Spencer going down to the lake and hitching rides at the boat ramp with older folks when he was in his early teens. Plenty of kids here fish, your a oddball if you dont!

And I’ve taught my son to fly fish. Eventually he will get my selection of fly rods, reels and antique lures and ABU baitcast reels.

As a party boat captain, I have a lot of kids come on board with their parents.
I love it when some kids come along, they make the trip fun. Their parents think the kids are annoying me with so many questions, but honestly It doesn’t bother me at all, because in the end the kids are almost always hooked on fishing when they get off the boat!
Heck the kids usually catch more fish than their parents without any help anyway! Sometimes if the bite is slow and we’re going for bigger fish, the kids get bored and put their rod in the holder and get it when a fish bites and usually get the fish hooked that way. The parents will sit there and try to set the hook as hard as they can, no matter how many times I tell them you’ll only lose the fish!
If the bite is slow, I’ll give the kids a sabiki rig tipped with small peices of squid, and let them catch baitfish and sand trout 2-3 fish at a time.

hmmm? To promote fishing? Mostly I wash the dishes, keep gas in the car and otherwise make sure my wife is happy. If that don’t get me allowed to take the kids fishing, nothing will.
