Is it OK to use kittens for Muskie fishing?
Sounds of Ed’s football game asked:
I heard that it’s common to use baby chicks, ducklings, kittens, and mice as bait when fishing for Pike and Muskies. I didnt believe it. Is this true?

A muskie will eat anything it can fit in its mouth so it may be true . But its not OK to use kittens but they might work.

I don’t know but it sounds good. It is a good way to get rid of your cats.

I would think that this would NOT be ok!!! People do all sorts of things, that doesn’t make it right.

I live in an area where Muskies are quite popular to fish, and I have never heard of anyone using any of those things that you listed. It is inhumane, and I’ll bet if someone gets caught doing it, it will be a trip to court and a hefty fine for animal cruelty.
They do make lures that resemble mice and rats, I know that. We have some antique Muskie lures that look like small rats. So even 80 years ago, people used lures that *looked* like live animals, but not the actual animal itself.
I shudder at the thought.

I’ve seen largemouth bass take out a few baby ducks before as well as a mouse. Fish are predatory animals, if they can get it in their mouth they will eat it.

Ah’ what ya’ have heard is basically true, however they be artificial. Watson’s Wrats has mice (”wrats”) and ducklings, both top-water used primarily for Muskies. As far as kittens go, I think that whomever ya’ heard it from must have been smokin’ a good, “bowl” of Hemp ; ). Kittens ay’, sure would like ta’ know where and how one would place a hook in them!? Ta’ reiterate, good bowl of Hemp aka marijuana. For the Wrats, Cabela’s has them, just “click” Freshwater Fishing and then Topwater Baits…

Better consult your fish & game regulations before trying any such thing.
Here in Wisconsin it is prohibited to use gamefish as bait, I can not imagine it would be allowed to use live birds (especially waterfowl) or mammals as bait.
As is well noted here, muskie and other carnivorous fish will attempt to eat anything they can get into their mouths (and n. pike & rock bass will even try to fit into their mouths things bigger than their mouths) if it is determined it is food it continues going down otherwise it is spit out.

They do make duckling fishing lures but to use a live Kitten is just wrong.I personally witnessed full grown ducks taken by Muskie but thats nature at it’s best ,and best left to Mother Nature to decide. I’ve heard of small dogs taken on the Detroit River last year, but as they say DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!!! Muskie will take all sorts of artificial baits as well as large Sucker Chubs under a float.Stick with that and you can’t go wrong!!!!!!!!!!GOOD LUCK and KEEP FISHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
