Is it easy to switch from bait to lure fishing?
roh P asked:
I am used to bait fishing and used to do a lot of this in South Africa. I see here in the UK lure fishing for shore fishing is more popular. How can I change to lure fishing? Is it a big transition or should I just stick to bait fishing?

I’m not sure what kind of fishing you are doing so it depends. There are many different types of lures out there that require different presentations. If you are looking to switch, go to a local tackle shop and ask them what lures would make it easiest for you to make the transition. Also ask them for tips on how to use that lure. That’s about the best that I can do to help you out.

It’s not easy but, not incredibly hard. Go to a few fishing seminars in your area and they will tell you how to fish your area. Go to your local tackle shop and ask them how to fish your lure. Try to get into the mind of the wounded bait fish and imitate it.

Well for me it seemed that lure fishing was better with me, though I used to lose a lot of my lures at the beginning cuz it got stuck at the bottom frequently. To prevent that I held the rod up higher and kept the line taut. But usually I put little pieces of some smelling bait on the hook of the lure to help attract the fish to it. It works for me really well and I get bites all the time with it.

you can bait fish in the UK its possibly more popular than lures
Id use lures and spinners, depending on the fish they are different weights but lines, swivels remain the same
only replace the hook and bait with a lure
with a lure, cast as far as you can, then reel in at different speeds without letting it sink to the bottom, ideally it will be just under the surface, good luck

y do u want to switch if its popular u dont want to do it because the fish may be more used to it what u want to do is stay away from the crowd and if u learned to baitfish rele well then stick to that lures where made just incase live bait wasnt avalable then u use that as a second resort but if u do want to learn to lure fish i wouldnt say switch it has its advantages but use live bait when evr possible so sure learn to lure fish it might come on handy but dont totaly switch just learn how to

Bait fishing from the shore is still a popular & productive method for shore fishing in the UK….. though in the Summer lure fishing (especially “Mackie Bashing” - mackerel fishing) is pretty popular.
Lure fishing is the easiest, and most straightforward technique to set-up there is….
stick the reel on the rod, thread line through eyes of rod, tie a suitably sized Snaplink swivel to the end of your line (enables quick change of lures + helps reduce line twist)… clip your lure to the snaplink swivel, and away you go (cast out, reel in, try find the speed the fish want the lure… helps to look for fish holding features).
This book has some great tips on Lure Fishing:
There’s a Limited Preview of it on Google Books:=

I would stick with what you know.
Bait fishing I would say is far more productive and still very popular here in the UK, whether shore or boat angling. How many competition anglers do you see fishing a plastic lure??
I think wherever you are - If you were to sit down two anglers right next to each other. 1 with a big jucy worm and one with a fake lure on. I would bet my last pound on who would catch the most fish!
You might need to resize all your equipment depending on what you use to fish for, I would definately take a wonder down to your fishing hot spots, have a wonder round, speak to some local anglers and scope out what they are using - Their the experts for that particular area and have probably fished the spot for years, knowing exactly whats best.
Found an excellent online tackle shop with great deals on terminal tackle and other sea fishing equipment:

lure fishing is a fair bit different to bait fishing, to have all the right equiptment for lure fishing you’ll need stuff like braided line to control the lure well, lures obviously they can be quite expensive. a rod that is suited to the area and fish types.etc.
