I need to buy a reel for my partner but havent got a clue what to buy?? It wud just be for basic fishing? Beginners fishing? Trout? Coarse? Not sea fishing though. Also I only wanted to pay about 30quid at the most. Would buying second hand be recommended off Ebay maybe? Please help by maybe suggesting a make of reel. Thanks very much!

If you know so very little about fishing, I think your best course is to either ask your partner exactly what make and model he/she wants, or (better yet) get a gift card. Better to avoid the awkwardness of that gift-giving situation where the recipient wants to accept the gift even though it’s not quite right. There will be no hurt feelings on either side. It may seem a little less warm and a little more clinical than opening a “real” present, but a gift card to a place where the person can get a fishing reel would enable you to get exactly what he/she wants. Since I don’t know how much a quid is, I’d just give him the money for it. fisher295

Walmart usually has a good selection of reels at about that price. Abu Garcia is a good brand but it will usually run about 35 to 45. castmoney

Give Cabela’s a call. They’ve got great products, fair prices, and fast shipping. Check em out.

If this is for light tackle and lake fishing take a look at a Zebco 33 combo rod/reel for about $30 at Walmart. This is great for beginners. It is a closed face reel which will eliminate ‘bird’s nests’. Once the angler gains a little experience, he/she can move up to a Garcia Spinning Reel. Me, I wouldn’t be caught dead fishing with nothing else but a Garcia 6000. SharonW
