i wanna start making my own lures for freshwater fishing, where do i start?
Matthew asked:
i just will be fishing bass, walleye, anything you can find in a southeast michigan lake, it is a pretty big size lake, i usually fish in the 5-8 foot waters, but sometimes i take a boat out to the drop off. Anyways, where can i go to start making my own lures?

Why would u want to make your own lures? There r thousands of lures on the market specially designed to catch different types of fish. The only people I know who make there own lures r fly fisherman. Do u have all the necassary stuff to start making crank baits, jigs, or rubber worms? I don’t think so. I will give u a tip. There is a new lure out for bass, walleyes, etc. It’s called the “Super Fluke”. It comes in 4-8 inch lengths and bass r tearing it up where I live (NC). It’s the best lure on the market right now for catching bass and I would say that walleyes would also hit it like crazy. It is white and resembles a hurt shad when being retrived. Give it a try. Making your own lures would cost u alot of $$$, and u may not have any success. I suggest buying lures from professional bait companies who have tested them and provide the best lures possible. Just a thought.

Here is a lure making supply company.
i would suggest watching a program called, “Search for big fish” or something like that, on VS channel. That guy makes a lot of his own lures. Actually, he makes molds of bought lures and then copies them as he needs more weight or flash.
I can understand the desire to catch fish on something you design and built, it has to be rewarding. But here in Florida we can fish all year and so time you have to make lures can be spent casting lures instead.
If you continue, you can design something new and maybe become famous. But there so many designs out there, so many unique lures that you will be hard pressed to find a productive lure that isn’t a copy of another. So accept this as a challenge.

I did this and had pretty good luck with them. Just get some wood it doesn’t really matter what kind but balsa seems to do best. Carve it out however you want it and paint to your suiting. I took some small hooks that have a closed circle on the end of it (can’t think the name of them) and put two of them on the bottom. I then got some split rings and attached them to the screws with treble hooks on them. You can also put one of the screws on the front to attach your line to. Your now done and have a topwater lure. Mine even caught some bass. Good luck fishin’!
Edit: I found a picture of what the screw I was talking about looks like. Again good luck fishin’!

makeing lures is more than just getting a new lure like at a store this gives u a HUGE advantage if u no how to make them becuase no one els fishes with THAT lure ure using so u can customize it as much as u want
make it look natural
make it so that the hooks are part of the bait not like those hard bait fish that have the hooks hanging down
give it SOUND
start with jigs and work ure way up to soft baits then to top waters then to crank baits
