Jake i really appreciate your honesty! find someone that has the same interest... Someone that you can learn together with... Fishing is a lifetime achievement that is never accomplished! Some may call themselves accomplished, but those are the ones that have yet more to learn... Watch fishing shows, Go to fishing shows in the area, find places people go fishing and observe, you will find the vast majority of fisherman to be quite courteous and informative when asked questions... Cabela's to me is a great place to get equipment, but for starters depending on what you go after... Targets, Walmart, Kmart... or any sporting good store or tackle shop! a rod with spinning reel and line complete could cost as little as $15... Look for sales... or borrow some equipment... Jake, if you have any fishing questions just write me @... Be glad to help! Done just about every type of fishing there is!.. Good Luck dmnshnlz1

First thing you need to do is check your states fishing regulations. Some states require fishing licenses for even fishing from a shore or bridge. Licenses aren't too expensive, and I would recommend getting the five year license or something similar because it is normally cheaper per year, and you don't have to worry about renewing your license as often.
Second, you need to decide what type of fishing you want to do. The size of the rod & reel, as well as what type of tackle you buy will all be determined by the type of fishing you want to do. I would recommend to look up local fishing reports for your area. You can find them by searching online search engines. Most people find local fishing piers to be productive. Bridges and waterways that can be fished from shore are usually popular as well.
Third, you need some gear. The cheapest way to get yourself set up with some fishing tackle is to find a good Rod & Reel combo to start yourself out with. Rods & Reels tend to be cheaper when they are bought already put together by the manufacturer. The best place to find a rod & reel is a local fishing tackle shop in my opinion. You get good service and can get a better feel for what your buying when you can try out different brands and sizes. I would recommend a spinning rod & reel for your first set up. Spinning reels are easier to get accustomed to using. The size of the set up will depend on the size of the fish you want to catch. If you want to be fishing off of a pier or under a bridge you will want about a 7' medium heavy to heavy rod that is rated for 20-30LB line. Without knowing exactly what you are going to be fishing for it is hard to recommend anything specific to you, but I can tell you that the local fishing shop I get all my gear at has a website that you can get most of their gear on. They have good prices, but don't have a lot of pictures for rods because it is harder to take pictures of rods. This is why I would recommend finding a local fishing tackle shop where you can ask about the local fishing spots and feel what the different sized Rod & Reel combos feel like. Then I would check this site (http://www.fishsoutheastern.com/xcart/home.php) and they should have better prices.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you would like anymore advice. FishingGuru

Fish takes a lot of patients. You want to start of with a rod called a "Alltra light rod" (got to your local fishing store and they will tell you what that is) if you are catching smaller fish which you will be because of you just starting, You will want a 6 pound test fishing line. Get some bobbers and night crawler worms and make sure the hook is not very big. I cant say where a good fishing spot is for you but what you want to do is find a deep hole somewhere and try that. Make sure if you are 16 or older you need to get a fishing license which is 22 bucks.
Hope this helped Jonathan B

Well I haven't been fishing for very long myself so I dont know how much help I'll be but I got a nice medium-heavy action rod for about $17 at walmart (it was on sale) it came with a 20lb reel (kinda wish I had gotten a 10lb reel but 20lb is still good). For places you'll have to find your self but if you have any decent sized neighborhood lakes nearby, a decent sized river, or a big lake then go fishing there. Jack
