Has anyone ever brought your dog fishing with you on a rocky jetty?
CalNative asked:
I was wondering how many of you have experience fishing or crabbing on a jetty with your dog.
We are going crabbing and are afraid our dog might slip and fall into the water or hurt herself on the rocky jetty at Bodega Bay. Should we leave her in the tent or do dogs navigate this well?

I have not taken dogs on a jetty before but I’ve seen dogs on jetties many times. All dogs I ran into on a jetty looked quite happy. They seemed to enjoy their walk on the rocks. But, there were several incidents when the dog decided that it is a good idea to jump into the water while it really isn’t. In most cases, the dog was able to find their way back onto the rocks or swim a distance to the beach or a nearby dock. In one case, the dog panicked and swam toward the wrong direction while its owner chased it hopelessly on the rocks. Someone end up calling the lifeguards. The lifeguard drag that poor dog by its collar all the way to the beach behind his jet ski; the situation would have been much better if the dog would get on the jet ski peacefully. Personally, I think all dogs, except the one that must be dragged behind a jet ski, think being on a jetty is a fun. Yes it is true that some owners got scared but I believe most owners think that it was a fun experience too. Now, how well behaved and/or how good a swimmer is your dog? LOL James W

It depends on the age and condition of the dog. The jetties at the entrance to Bodega Harbor consist of large jagged rocks that are difficult for people to negotiate. I suspect that most dogs have an easier time on that jetty than the people accompanying them.
Most people fish or crab from the jetty on the Doran Park side of the harbor which has warning signs about walking on the rocks. (I found it difficult to carry lots of gear across those rocks, so I stayed close to the beach.)
I have seen plenty of dogs there. Park rules require dogs to be on leashes, 6 feet or shorter.
Be forewarned that there is an undertow in Bodega Bay and much of the central coast. I only mention this because, this year, at least 2 people in Pacifica have drowned trying to save their dogs from the rip tides. Ironically their dogs eventually swam back to shore. TFIA

My dad and I took my dog fishing along with us a few years ago. We were fishing off the dam… sticks, rocks, concrete slabs… everywhere. She seemed to have no problem with them at all. Except the water, she was just a little afraid of the water. My dad took care of that problem quick! He picked her up and tossed her in the water. After that, she couldn’t stay out.
I’m figuring there’s really no difference in the construction of either a dam or a jetty. They’re both pretty much made by piling rocks on top of each other and a lot of people do slip and fall on both. Dogs are no different. They can lose their footing just as easily as we can. My dog was pitbull though, she could’ve handled a slip and fall just a little better than any other dog. Grand Master BasserĀ®
