Going fishing what would attract bait fish into a trap?
Tavi asked:
Trying to catch some bait fish for trout fishing, what is the best thing to use to catch them? Thinking either peanut butter, meat, or stale bread.

Bread, worms are good. They do make scented flavorings that you can use to attract them. You could also just use a dip net, or a net with small snough holes, lay it as flat as you can, then capture them that way.

Punch some holes in the top of a can of cat food and throw that in your trap. Try to get a fish flavored cat food. 40yr exp.

Well there are a lot of different things that you can use. But it all depends on what you are going for. What type of bait fish are you trying to catch in your trap? what type of trap are you using? Is it a cast net a dip net or a box trap?
I would suggest going to a local park lake (they are filled with small blue gill). From there I would use a small trout like hook with either a small piece of worm, or other bait. (Sometimes even a tiny piece of plastic works for these tiny blue gills) These are great bait fish for most bigger species.
Now if you are looking for saltwater bait fish. I would walk the beaches with a cast net looking for schooling bait fish and throwing the net into the school.
Good luck!

Put bread in an old sock and tie it off. Hang the sock from the middle of the trap. The bread particles will come out of the sock in very small pieces attracting small fish into the trap.

Forget everything else. You’ve got an Ace up your sleeve w/the stale bread.

bread and bacon is what I use. Stale bread would work good. Baby bluegill love it.

The best bait for minnows in fresh water that I have found is pork rinds. Yep, pork rinds. The same old kind sold in stores as snacks in different flavors. Just the plain kind are fine for the minnow trap.
Try them you will be surprised. Good luck.

best tip i’ve got for minnows is get two plastic cola bottles and cut them so one goes inside the other. big ones got lid on and inside one has lid removed so the minnows can get to the bread inside. way it down with a few stones and leave until next day and theres your bait! i use small hook on minnows top lip (if its not heavy enough attach a small split shot) and it looks like its feeding on bottom. bigger ones let swim freely and wait for the bite. tight lines to all.
