Does anyone call hunting or fishing with your bare hands coon hunting?

Mike asked:

I have a disagreement with my brother. He stated that some people refer to bare handed hunting or fishing as coon hunting because raccoons hunt with their hands. I say many animals do and that’s he is wrong. Is he right or am I correct?

Well, you phrased the question in such a manner that you’ve answered it already. Obviously your brother (who is an anyone) calls bare handed hunting coon hunting.

But for me, coon hunting refers to the process of hunting raccoons, usually with hounds. It’s most enjoyable when the moon is big and bright, the sky full of bright stars and there is a touch of frost in the air. Sitting in the truck, out on the hilltop, listening to that long lonesome howl as Phantom worked out the trail of that old he-coon is still one of my favorite memories (hearkening back to 1969 now and being 14) Texas R

Your brother is totally wrong. It is a concept he dreamed up in his mind. While it makes sense to him, it obviously makes no sense to the rest of the world. This is the first time I have ever heard this used in this manner. And I had thought I had heard everything. dumdum

I hate to come between two brothers on an issue, but I have to tell you both the truth. I have been a professional outdoorsman ALL of my adult life. I have guided, been a game warden, owned a 5,440 acre hunting preserve, became a master taxidermist, published outdoor recreation newspapers, and been an outdoor writer with hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles to my credit. I have literally hunted and fished from coast to coast and from Georgia to Alaska. I have spent time in the outdoors with some of the best (and some of the worst) sportsmen in the country. At NO time have I ever heard the expression “coon hunting” as applied to anyone hunting or fishing like a raccoon with their bare hands. In theory, it sounds like it could apply, but I have NEVER heard it applied. I would think, with my 60+ years of experience in the fields of 35 states in the USA and a few provinces of Canada, I would have heard of it by now. I haven’t. So on this issue, I side with you. Good luck. Dan B

yes, raccoons hunt with their hands but they also have 10 times the nerve endings in their paws so they touch everything they come across. I grew up in the country with uncles who hunted raccoons and I would say “coon hunting ” is hunting raccoons not other animals. YOu are right your bro is wrong! congrats! what do you get for winning the bet? kaileym
